Cardiovascular Endurance

Cardiovascular endurance is important for surfers due to the nature of the paddling involved. If your paddle fitness is down because you haven't surfed for a while, you are always going to struggle for the first few sessions back.

There are ways however to keep your fitness up even when there is no swell. Cross-training by doing a different sport can be a highly effective way to keep your fitness up. If you want the best results, we recommend swimming as a good cardiovascular workout. Freestyle has a similar technique to paddling on a surfboard, and therefore it allows you to keep the endurance up in your upper body as well as building cardiovascular fitness.

In our program Total Surfing Fitness - Functional Training for Surfers, we use a combination of interval training and swimming workouts. Interval training can be done by running, or another suitable exercise (eg rowing, kayaking, riding, etc).
