Core Strength & Balance

Core strength refers to the strength and stability around your abdominal, lower back and hip muscles. As surfing incorporates a lot of twisting and rotating, core strength plays a critical part in controlling the movements on your board. The stronger your core, the easier it will be to perform more challenging manoeuvres and maintain good form. It will also help reduce the risk of injury.

Balance is also critical for surfers. If your balance is better there is less chance of you wiping out on the take off and whilst carving on the wave.

Here are some example exercises from our program Total Surfing Fitness - Functional Training for Surfers:

Back Extension

  • Lie on the stability ball with your feet against a wall for support.

  • Keeping your back straight and your hands behind your head, slowly lower your trunk towards the floor bending from the hips and then slowly raise back to a straight body position.

  • To make it harder, hold a weight plate above your head.

Stability Ball Balance Twist

  • Kneel on the ball whilst holding a weight plate or medicine ball in your hands.

  • Twist the weight / medicine ball from one side of your body to the other whilst maintaining your balance.

  • If kneeling is too easy, perform the exercise with one foot and one knee on the ball.
